Thrilled to announce I am the winner of the Jacob Hartog Prize 2026 with my work Vesalius Specillum II. I would like to extend my deepest appreciation for being selected as the recipient of this esteemed prize. It truly means a lot.

‘In the Hardenbergzaal, Bijl presents a work that reveals itself slowly. From a distance it appears restrained, but up close a world of softness, precision and craftsmanship unfolds. The hand of the artist is both poetic and confident, and the composition is carefully placed, reminiscent of a classical landscape yet situated in an unexpected context.

The title refers to a medical instrument from the tradition of Andreas Vesalius, subtly transforming the scene. What first reads as a landscape begins to suggest an interior space within the body, opening an additional layer of meaning.

The jury praised the exceptional craftsmanship of the work and the way the title enriches the interpretation of the image.’

Named/Nameless: William Morris and the Radical Imagination
19 January 2026 the Arc, Winchester

Programmed to coincide with the gallery exhibition Beauty of the Earth: The Art of May, Jane & William Morris, this day aims to explore lines of thought and practice relevant to social, political, artistic and environmental matters, deriving both from the Morris family and those who have or will engage with them.

Utilising the figure of the Named/Nameless, or unseen labour, a recurring motif in the writings and workings of Morris as a focal point of discussion, together we will assess the real ramifications of his visions. Join artists, activists, doctoral students and researchers at this specialist study day set to enliven a truly poignant and radical British artistic legacy.

With talks from leading figures working in relation to legacies of Pre-Raphaelitism and the Morris family, this will be an excellent opportunity to engage with the workings of the latest artistic and research-based practices revolving around the Morris family and their wider circle.

Guest speakers include Dr Suzanne Fagence Cooper, Dr Serena Trowbridge, Dr Dion Dobrzynski, Artist Freddie Yauner, Artist Margje Bijl and more to be announced.
