The drawing ‘Hair as in August 2018’ was nominated for the Van Ommeren de Voogt prize 2018. Margje Bijl was awarded a group show at Pulchri with nominee Sandra Thie and winner Paul Nassenstein.

Over the years Margje gradually let go of the concept of the other and the waves of Janey’s hair changed into the waves of Margje’s youth, which she spent on a liveaboard barge in Friesland. For the solo exhibition ‘Looking for Janey’ Margje created the series ‘Water as in’ with graphite powder, ink and tiny glass particles.

As a mid-career artist Margje’s pencil drawing ‘Vesalius Specillum II’ was recently awarded with the Jacob Hartog Prize 2026.

Besides drawing, photography plays a major role in Margje’s work. Referring to Jane Morris’s life story Margje transformed Jane’s world into her own, adopting contemporary clothing and poses while visiting several of Rossetti, Jane and William Morris’s former homes, taking staged photos on location with the photographer Hein van Liempd.

Margje’s research into photography involves combining 19th Century techniques with contemporary techniques. Her photographic work has been shown in the Netherlands at Gallery Herenplaats, Gallery Pulchri, Gallery de KunstSuper and Haagse Kunstkring.

In England Margje participated in the group exhibition ‘Love is Enough’, at the Mill in London (2012). She also showed a video piece at the ‘The Pre-Raphaelite Sisters: Making Art’ Conference at the University of York (2019).
